Bessemer, the county seat, sits in the heart of the Gogebic Range’s iron-mining country. Ironwood, the county’s largest city, lies just to the west on the Wisconsin border, with Wakefield to its east on Sunday Lake. Watersmeet anchors the county’s wild eastern half, surrounded by the Ottawa National Forest. Lake Gogebic — the Upper Peninsula’s largest inland lake at more than 13,000 acres — straddles the county’s eastern edge with Ontonagon County.
